The iconic guardians of Antonio Canova, reimagined through an unprecedented technical achievement. Artist Jilly Bernard has cast a strict edition of twelve from the original terracotta estate models of Catharine Courtauld, currently resting in a private Tuscan garden.
This pair represents a breathtaking synthesis of Italian Neoclassical form, complex Renaissance-era craft, and a legendary artistic lineage.
Jilly Bernard is a contemporary fine artist whose practice is rooted in the rigorous, historic discipline of scagliola. Training in Florence and Rome under the medium’s master practitioners, her work transforms this demanding 17th-century craft into a vehicle for monumental contemporary sculpture. Today, her works command spaces ranging from private collections to the Gun Room at Blenheim Palace, and the Princess Royal Stand at Cheltenham Racecourse.
At House of Moy, our collections are not presented in a vacuum; they are experienced in a fully realized dialogue of history and material. In exclusive collaboration with Katya of Eves and Samuel, the gallery is anchored by a curated selection of 17th to 20th-century antique furniture. Every historic wooden piece you see – serving as the foundation for our terracotta or the context for our scagliola – is part of the collection and available for acquisition, proving that uncompromising craftsmanship demands an equally masterful setting.
