Orcio Rigato

Orcio Rigato

The Orcio Rigato stands as the definitive archetype of Tuscan agrarian design within the Studio collection. Sharing the fascinating linguistic heritage of the smooth orcio, its name traces back to an ancient Roman term for a person of vast, unapologetic girth. This history perfectly captures the piece's defining physical character: an imposing, expansive belly that commands a space through sheer scale, sweeping upward into high, rounded shoulders and a classic rolled collar.

The surface is entirely enveloped in a relentless sequence of horizontal ridges – a historic technique known as rigato decoration. Originally, this texture was a critical feat of structural engineering. When hand-moulding massive jars to hold immense volumes of olive oil, artisans utilized these thickened bands of clay as external scaffolding, preventing the curved walls from bursting under the severe outward pressure of the liquid. Furthermore, these deep grooves allowed heavy ropes to bite securely into the form, preventing the heavy jars from slipping during transit on merchant ships and agrarian carts.

Over generations, this rugged utilitarian necessity was elevated into a highly deliberate, rhythmic aesthetic that casts striking architectural shadows. From a critical standpoint, maintaining perfectly level, concentric banding across such a vast, swelling profile is an exceptional technical challenge, requiring absolute precision to ensure the rhythm does not falter as the clay radically curves inward and outward. Forged exclusively from pure, iron-rich Impruneta clay, the Orcio Rigato seamlessly balances authentic ancestral engineering with a profound, textural authority.
