The surface of the clay is a triumph of decorative elegance. Beneath a highly detailed rim, an incredibly fluid, continuous vine winds gracefully across the expanse of the piece. Nestled quietly within this sprawling relief are delicate impressions of small birds resting among the foliage. This lyrical motif is anchored by a richly defined lower band of scrollwork, leading the eye down to the foot of the form. Here, the clay is painstakingly hand-pressed into historic moulds to reveal stylised, beaded clusters – a fascinating, repeating pattern strongly reminiscent of ancient Assyro-Babylonian reliefs.
