Cilindro Romanico

Cilindro Romanico

The Cilindro Romanico brings a profound sense of architectural rhythm to the Masterworks collection. Modelled as a monumental, straight-sided cylinder, the vessel is entirely enveloped in an extraordinarily detailed low-relief frieze of climbing grapevines and foliage. Framed by precise, repeating geometric borders at its upper and lower edges, the piece relies on a perfectly balanced, robust profile, designed to act as a definitive botanical anchor for a formal terrace, a grand courtyard, or an interior hall.

Historically, the dense, continuous ornamentation draws its influence directly from the Romanesque period, an era defined by its revival of classical motifs and deep reverence for agricultural abundance. During the Florentine Renaissance, replicating these monumental utility vessels in pure terracotta allowed aristocratic estates to celebrate the harvest. Far from being devalued as a mere utility object, the architectural cylinder was elevated into a profound aesthetic statement, serving as an enduring homage to history. This dedication to historical excellence was championed by the Manifattura di Signa, a prestigious workshop opened in 1895 by the brothers Camillo and Andrea Bondi. They established their foundry specifically to combat the proliferation of low-quality pottery , focusing entirely on producing the most beautiful, high-quality terracotta pieces of their time. Featured directly in their original 1910 catalogue, this piece remains one of the most remarkable examples of continuous low-relief work executed on such a monumental scale.

From a critical standpoint, successfully producing a perfectly straight-sided cylinder covered in continuous low relief is a rigorous test of the clay's structural memory. Unlike a flared urn or a tapered vessel, a true cylinder lacks natural geometric reinforcement; its vertical walls must support themselves entirely without the aid of an inward or outward curve. As the object undergoes its natural 7% shrinkage during the drying phase, the incredibly dense, varying thicknesses of the sprawling vines and grape clusters lose moisture at irregular rates. The artisan must masterfully regulate the drying environment, ensuring the intricate low-relief details remain immaculate without causing the wet walls to bow or warp out of their strict, vertical alignment before the final firing.
